Queen Meheux has worked with immigrants, refugees, and asylees as an instructor teaching English as a second language (ESL) for over a decade. She previously worked with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in their immigration department as an immigration caseworker. She recalled her first interview at IRC in which the manager expressed that with her education, qualifications, and talent, Queen was well-positioned to launch her own organization. A seemingly far-fetched idea, given she was applying for an Internship position. However, the thought was planted in her heart and watered until it became a dream realized.
Over the years, she volunteered with organizations such as Catholic Charities, as an ESL instructor, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice as a volunteer with their citizenship clinics. As an ESL instructor she has had the opportunity to interact and interview students over the years and was impressed by the diverse skills and abilities that they bring with them from their native countries. She taught them outside the textbooks, helped them write resumes, and coached them in preparation for job interviews, while providing them civic-based ESL instruction. However, she realized that there were few if any infrastructure on English language acquisition programs, civic-based literacy and ESL instruction, and job skills training. programs that could guide the integration of highly skilled immigrants and refugees into the American system and culture in which they found themselves once they gained their Legal Permanent Resident status. Queen founded Pathway institute as a result of a dream that has been very dear to her heart - to help LPR regain their careers.
She partners with colleges, universities, faith-based, and other community organizations to match the skills of these immigrants while providing the educational and job training that will equip them with the tools needed to harness their unique skills and the richness of their cultural attributes into professional careers.
